A Team of Students from NUST Wins HEC-Microsoft Imagine Cup


A team from National University of Science and Technology (NUST) Islamabad won the Finals of Imagine Cup 2019 National Level, arranged by Higher Education Commission (HEC) and Microsoft office of Pakistan. The name of the team was “EKKO-Wave Therapeutic Device”. The winning group will be joining World Regional Finals in the Amsterdam. After that, the final stage will be the World Finals, which will be held in Seattle. Initially, 48 teams participated in the event. Out of 48 teams, the team from NUST won Imagine Cup Finals by developing EKKO-A Wave, an item which uses vibrational waves to provide the solution for restoration of cognitive rehabilitation. A team from Sukkur Institute of Business Administration named “Creative Crew” was the very first runner-up while a team from City University, Peshawar named “City Care” was the second runner-up team among all the competitors.

Federal Minister for Education & Professional Training Shafqat Mahmood was the chief guest at the event. Dr. Tariq Banuri, Chairman Higher Education Commission, Lt Gen (Retd) Muhammad Asghar, Executive Director Higher Education Commission, Mr. Abid Zaidi, Country Manager Microsoft along with vice chancellors and a huge number of students from different universities joined the event. Shafqat Mahmood appreciated the efforts of the students and said that their results were exceptional. He said that we hope these projects will play a significant role in the industry after going commercial. Our Youth have a lot of skill as well as an atmosphere is being created to utilize their ability to achieve the maximum, he mentioned. Pakistan is facing challenges in the case of quality of education on the national level and these events will be helpful to increase the quality and will inspire other students to perform better. He pointed out that the quality of education and the significance of research study to the nationwide requirements are the real difficulties Pakistan is dealing with. Many remote areas were targeted specifically in the effort for Imagine Cup, significantly Hyderabad, Jamshoro, Sukkur, and Quetta. Besides, this specific achievement of the competition was that there was 25 percent participation of female students.
