New coke was launched by the famous brand Coca-Cola back in 1985. It is one of the worst examples of the failed products launched by a famous company. A famous maxim goes as,
“never mess with a winning formula”
The company has decided to change the flavors of coke and ended by introducing a failed coke.
Roberto Goizueta, the Chief Executive at that time, has described the flavor of the new coke as “smoother, uh, rounder yet, bolder, a more harmonious flavor.” People initially starting buying but soon ended up. After a huge loss, the old formula of the coke was restored but there were still complaints that the new formula was never the same again.
Jell-O for Salads
Every heard about savory Jell-O? the trend of congealed salads was rampant in the first half of the 20th century. People used lime Jell-O to give a sour taste to the foods. So, the company decided to introduce a new product that was named Jell-O for Salads. As the name suggested, it was designed for salads in tomato, mixed vegetables, and celery.
However, the new product appeared to be a complete flop for the company and they stopped making Jell-O for salads.
Tomato ketchup was very popular among the masses. For more than 100 years, the company has been receiving acclaim from the masses. The tomato colored ketchup was a success for the company. Heinz decided to appeal to the younger generation i.e. the kids after introducing colorful ketchup. He introduced different flavors of ketchup with some wacky colors including electric blue and funky purple.
However, this new multi-colored ketchup didn’t attract the attention of the parents, so, it did not last long.
Another soft drink failure after the new coke was the ‘crystal Pepsi’. It fails more badly than the new coke. It is pertinent to note that food and drink items are very difficult to accept even when they didn’t offer exceptional taste.
Just as the new coke spoiled the real and original taste of the coke, the crystal Pepsi didn’t appear according to the expectations of the people. The crystal Pepsi never gets the due credit and was a huge failure of the time.
Wow! Chips was another major failure of 1998. In the 90s people were conscious about their diet and health. Fat-free foods were acknowledged. So, the Frito-Lay company has introduced Wow! Chips with many flavors. It claims to be fat-free. It offers three different varieties to the customers. Though they offer low fat, there were some effects of the wow! Chips as well. It causes Loose stools and stomach cramping among the masses. Soon it becomes out of trend and people stop buying it.
The ingredient that causes stomach cramps appeared to be the Olestra. It also “inhibits the absorption of some of the vitamins and other nutrients”.
