What is Coronavirus?

The most rampant virus creating a lot of panic and anxiety among the masses across the world is “Coronavirus”. What is Coronavirus? Before discussing its devastating effects on mankind, let us first clear what exactly a Coronavirus is.

What is Coronavirus?

According to scientists and experts, Coronavirus belongs to a family which is known as Coronaviridae. The virus is being identified recently and is causing severe respiratory problems among the people, especially among those having poor health.

It is pertinent to note that Coronavirus is a contiguous virus jumping from one person to another and effecting his or her respiratory system badly. Within the past three months, this virus has effected more than 89,000 people across different countries. Reports revealed that more than 3000 people have surrendered to death.

Coronavirus is 96% identical to a virus

Scientists have discovered that these types of viruses are usually spreading through animals including livestock, pets, and bats. Early research on the virus suggested that Coronavirus is 96% identical to a virus that is commonly found in bats.

It is commonly believed that Coronavirus is behind the diseases SARS and MERS that are traced to civet cats and dromedary camels respectively. The WHO has named the novel coronavirus as SARS-CoV-2. The study group on coronavirus has “formally recognizes this virus as a sister to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronaviruses (SARS-CoVs).”

The disease which is being caused by this lethal virus is named Covid-19 by the World Health Organization (WHO). Co is for Corona, Vi is for Virus while D is for disease, 19 means it was identified in 2019.

So, in order to avoid any confusion let me make it clear that the official name of the novel coronavirus is SARS-CoV-2 while the disease that is caused by SARS-CoV-2 is called COVID-19.

How it started?

So, now the question that arises in our mind is from where and how it started?

A group study on Coronavirus has revealed that it originally belongs to Wuhan, a city in China having more than 11 million of the population. It started at the very beginning of December 2019 when the first patient was found positive for the virus.

It basically emerged from a Seafood market in China that sells fish and other animal met including bats, Pangolins and snakes. However, the very first patients of the virus have said that he has not been to the seafood market leaving everybody in wonder to discover the actual origin of the virus.

The study group has come to the conclusion that this virus may have originated from somewhere else and later on being transported to the seafood market. Under the wake of the deadly virus, the Chinese authorities have locked the entire market on January 01, 2020.

Coronavirus is caused by snakes

The Journal of Medical Virology has published that Coronavirus is caused by snakes on Jan 22. However, the theory was being rejected later on by other studies that suggested that it is actually caused by bats. Peter Daszak, the President of nonprofit EcoHealth Alliance has said,

“We haven’t seen evidence ample enough to suggest a snake reservoir for Wuhan coronavirus.”

He cleared the real cause for coronavirus, “This work is really interesting, but when we compare the genetic sequence of this new virus with all other known coronaviruses, all of its closest relatives have origins in mammals, especially bats. Therefore, without further details on the testing of animals in the markets, it looks like we are no closer to knowing this virus’s natural reservoir.”

Real cause of the virus

Additional research to find out the real cause of the virus is still under process. There is a lot more to unfold regarding the origin of coronavirus or SARS-CoV-2. For now, the study clearly proves a similar virus to coronavirus is commonly found in bats and hence it is originated from bats.
