The direct assessment of ROM is not possible by the CPU of the computer. In order to perform this task, the user must first transfer the ROM data to the RAM, and then it is being accessed by the CPU.
ROM is also used in the process of booting up the system that is called Bootstrapping. ROM stores all those instructions that are used in the Bootstrapping of a computer. The data stored in ROM cannot be modified like RAM.

PROM stands for Programmable Read Only Memory. PROM can be modified but only once by the computer user.
EPROM stands for Erasable and Programmable Read Only Memory. In order to erase the content of EPROM, the computer experts must need to apply the ultraviolet rays otherwise it is not possible to erase.
EEPROM stands for Electrically Erasable and Programmable Read Only Memory. The data stored in EEPROM can be erased electrically as its name suggested. It can be reprogrammed about ten thousand times.
